Govt Announces HELB Disbursement Date for First-Year Students.
On August 15, which is also the day that universities open, the first HELB loan distribution for first-year students will begin.
This is in accordance with Education CS Julius Ogamba, who explained that the money would be disbursed gradually in order to make the transition easier for incoming pupils.
A significant boost for students looking for loans for higher education was also revealed by the Ministry: a significant increase in funding for the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
CS Ogamba further announced on Thursday that the allocation for HELB will rise from Ksh36 billion to Ksh41 billion.
According to the Ministry, some of this money will go toward student tuition and maintenance. Scholarships will receive the remaining funds.
According to the Ministry, Ksh13 billion would be used for student tuition, with the remaining Ksh16.9 billion going to the Universities Fund to provide scholarships for deserving students.
The increase in funding, according to Ogamba, is a component of the government’s continuous efforts to guarantee that students do not face financial obstacles while pursuing higher education.
As far as the Universities Fund is concerned, disbursement has officially commenced, with the first quarter of scholarship funds for the 2025/2026 financial year being sent to public universities.
Under the funding model, the Ministry expects to support around 201,695 first-year university students and over 237,000 TVET trainees for the upcoming academic year.
In addition, 257,523 continuing students are also set to benefit from the funding. The government estimates that 64 per cent of the expected university applicants and 51 per cent of TVET trainees for the September intake have already submitted their applications.
Scholarship applications are still being accepted for students who took the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service’s (KUCCPS) 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Just a few weeks after HELB declared it lacked the resources to offer new student loans this year, the government made its most recent declaration.
The CEO of HELB, Geoffrey Monari, bemoaned the fund’s Ksh26 million this year, which was a significant decrease from the Ksh48 billion it received during the previous fiscal year.
