The Ministry of Education has allowed parents to propose admission for Grade 10 students at senior schools of their choice following a placement review in response to complaints from parents and others surrounding Grade 10 placement.

A second review phase will occur from January 6 to 9, according to a statement released by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on Friday, January 2.

According to Ogamba, the review period allows students, parents, and guardians to request a reevaluation of their initial or updated senior school placements under the Competency-Based Curriculum.

”As earlier indicated, interested learners will have a further opportunity to apply for review of their placement from 6th January, 2026, to 9th January, 2026. The revision will provide parents, guardians, and learners the opportunity to provide legitimate and verifiable grounds to justify a reconsideration of the initial or revised placement,” the statement read in part.

The CS stated that joining instructions for students who have already been placed have been accessible on the placement portal since December 30. The first revision of Grade 10 placements was completed on December 29, 2025.

As the government aims to combine access to education with the best use of existing school spaces, the ministry claims that the second revision phase will be restricted to situations in which parents and students may offer valid and verifiable grounds for requesting a change of placement.

According to Ogamba, depending on the specifics of the application, parents can request additional evaluation through the learner’s junior school or directly at the senior school of interest.

Heads of institutions will submit the requests via the placement portal, and they will be handled in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s established procedures.

Simultaneously, the ministry announced that on Monday, January 5, all basic education institutions will reopen for the first term of the 2026 school year.

Monitoring school reopening and making sure the official academic calendar is followed are the responsibilities of the regional and county directors of education.

The Competency-Based Curriculum, which established Grade 10 as the starting point for senior secondary education, includes the placement review procedure as part of the ongoing transition to the senior school level.

The ministry urged parents and guardians to use the official placement channels and timelines to avoid disruptions as schools begin the 2026 academic year.
